{Recipe Alert: bringing New Orleans to Cincy}

This past weekend was The Essence Music Fest in New Orleans. I would have loved to been there experiencing all the music acts and catching up with some of the natural hair seminars and LOVING on my family.

I couldn't make it so instead I brought New Orleans, at least the food, to me!

fresh picked okra from our garden box

my okra battered and fried

Fried Okra Recipe: wash and cut fresh okra into 1/2" pieces. Soak okra in a 1/3 cup buttermilk for 10 minutes. Drain okra and toss in a premixed bowl of flour, cornmeal, cayenne, garlic powder, salt, pepper, thyme, basil--and any other seasoning you prefer. Preheat 1/2 cup of canola oil in a cast iron skillet. Drop floured okra in hot oil and cook until brown. Pull out with slotted spoon and rest on paper towels.
Sprinkle with a little salt.
Serve warm.

Shrimp Creole

This is such an easy meal.
Shrimp Creole Recipe: chop 1 large onion and 1/2 bunch of celery. Place in dutch oven and cover with 1/4 cup of olive oil. Saute covered for 10 minutes stirring occasionally. Add 24 oz an of chopped tomatoes, 3 Tbsp of tomato paste, 3 ozs of tomato sauce, and 2 tbsp of creole seasoning of your choice. Add some 3 cloves of chopped garlic,  fresh parsley, thyme and a pinch of oregano. I like to add a splash of white wine and a pinch of sugar to tame the acidity of the tomatoes. Simmer for 40 minutes adding 1-2lbs of peeled and devined shrimp the last 10 minutes.

Serve over rice (we prefer brown).

To give it some extra heat but not to increase the heat in the whole pot I add a couple splashes of hot sauce per bowl and topped off with a parsley spring.

If you try these recipes let me know how they turn out!

ENJOY!

Snapshots of Mardi Gras 2012

As soon as we got in my first stop was to pick up a fried shrimp po'boy sandwhich!

Friday night, I got all dressed up and joined my cousins for the annual Zulu Coronation Ball. It was a night of elegant ball gowns and tuxedos, delicious food and on time drinks. We danced until 4am.

Saturday we slept!!!

Sunday, we went to a Mardi Gras church service and enjoyed King Cake and that good ole' church punch right after service.

Sunday night we caught some night parades and ended the evening with some fresh beignets from Cafe Du Monde!

Monday, we enjoyed all the beautiful parades that took part in Lundi Gras! We came home with three big bags of beads and throws.

Tueday, Mardi Gras Day, we had a ball. We caught the Zulu, REX and the truck parades.

We ran into some Indians and even did a little dancing in the streets.

Overall we had an amazing time and I know the boys will never forget their special time in New Orleans for Mardi Gras 2012.

I have videos I will try to load soon.

Until next time..

We're Going to New Orleans

New Orleans Mardi Gras
New Orleans Mardi Gras by mrsrjdean featuring sequin dresses

I can not wait until Thursday, the boys myself, my mom and stepdad are heading to the Crescent City to celebrate Mardi Gras with our family! Although I will miss Scott I am glad to be sharing Mardi Gras with the boys.

Here are some of the things I plan on doing while down there.

1. Catching parades- between the Endymion, Bacchus and Zulu I know the boys will love seeing the bands and the ornate floats.
2. I picked up
3. Jay-Z's Decoded from the library and plan on digging into it on the road.
3. Special request from Scott- stock up on Zapp's potato chips  and of course I will stock up on my Camelia's beans.
4. I'm hoping to get a couple pounds of some boiled crawfish. I hope they are in season!
5. I can't wait to hit up the Zulu Ball at the convention center with some of my cousins. This dress reminds me of the one I will be wearing.
6. Special request from Tre'- he wants to ride the street car again. This time we will do St. Charles route to see all the fancy houses.
7. KING CAKE and pralines- sugar overload!
8. A second line- I love second lines and know the boys will love to dance to the music.

Laissez les bons temps rouler
